Cultivating Access: Native Crops and Shared Futures

Project type

Photography

Date

May 2025

Location

Portland, Maine

In urban neighborhoods and community plots across Portland, access to fresh, culturally relevant food is about far more than nutrition. It is about heritage and belonging. Cultivating Community works at the intersection of agriculture and equity, empowering diverse growers, youth leaders, and neighbors to build a sustainable local food system from the ground up.

Strega Studios partnered with the Cultivating Community team to produce an authentic brand photography suite that captures the vital human energy behind their mission.

Translating grassroots food justice work into compelling visual storytelling requires moving past staged, overly polished imagery. Cultivating Community needed an image library that felt as deeply rooted as their programs, capturing real connection between people and the land without losing the unscripted grit of daily farm work.

We took a grounded, presence-focused approach to document their work across youth-led farm stands, community gardens, and shared growing spaces. By focusing on candid moments between neighbors, hands in the dirt, and the quiet beauty of everyday cultivation, we created a visual narrative centered on community resilience.

The resulting photography suite provides Cultivating Community with a rich, multi-use asset bank for campaign outreach, annual reports, and web platforms, helping them build deeper connections with supporters and neighbors across Maine.
